Children's author Diane Z. Shore is a big fan of writing in rhyme because of the enjoyment it brings to children. Shore didn't know much about poetry or rhyme when she first started writing but learned the craft through studying well-known children's poets such as Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky. She also practiced her rhyming skills using nursery rhymes as a starting point. Shore strongly recommends that aspiring children's writers read like a writer, reading for content, structure, and word choice. Most importantly, she says, is to avoid focusing solely on getting published; focus instead on improving your craft. That's when you'll see your writing grow and doors will start to open for you. Shore found great success with doing fillers for children's magazines, including puzzles, poems, and games, which can be a great way to break into the children's market and sharpen your skills.
