Writer and producer Jack Bernstein, known for the film Ace Ventura and for his work on popular TV shows such as Monk and NCIS: New Orleans, believes that what makes a great character on paper may not always make a great character in film or television. Screenwriters are subject to casting, which is out of the writers' control. In his experience, networks tend to want to cast well-known actors for television shows, even if they are not the best fit for a character. Bernstein has learned that creating a character is an evolutionary process. You might write a character with a specific actor in mind but then someone totally different gets cast in the role. One advantage with writing for television, he says, is that the writer can adapt to casting decisions and write to a specific actor's strengths, while maintaining his or her overall vision for the character. When a book or screenplay is adapted to film, the writer may lose more of their creative vision in the process.
