Characters are a key element of any fiction story and having properly developed characters can turn a mediocre story into a great story. Screenwriter, author, and MFA educator Michael Tabb approaches his own character development with a very focused purpose. Your story must have a strong protagonist experiencing both an inner and outer journey, Tabb says. This main character must show growth or change throughout the story and it is the writer's job to take the audience on this journey. He recommends thinking of the protagonist as the planet earth with supporting characters as surrounding moons. Your story must also have a strong antagonist pushing against the main character's outer journey. Every character you create must have a defined purpose or role in order to be effective.
