Every great story must have a compelling protagonist or main character. This becomes especially important when writing a book series - you must develop a character that can maintain a reader's interest over time. Just as equally important, though, is the antagonist or villain, as author Bob Morris explains. Your antagonist must be as unlikable as your protagonist is likable, he says. In order to create the dynamics necessary to move a plot forward and keep your readers engaged, your "bad guy" needs to pose some sort of threat to your protagonist and must be a worthy opponent. When writing a series, each book must stand alone with new antagonists or threats. This can prove to be challenging, even for established authors like Lee Child who have very successful, bestselling series.
