Dialogue can be a very powerful tool in writing and is a key element in any fiction novel. Award-winning, bestselling author Carla Norton says the key to good dialogue is using it to make each of your characters distinct. You don't want to do this by using only dialogue tags such as "John said" or "Sally asked." You also don't want to rely heavily on adverbs, which are those –ly words that modify verbs such as "John said angrily." Norton advises writers to assume the attitude of their characters when writing dialogue. You want your readers to know who is talking just based on word choice, she says, and by making your characters distinct voices shine through. A good check to see if you are writing dynamic dialogue is to read out loud to yourself. This might help you pick up on things that need strengthened that you didn't notice when writing.
