Characters live in a writer’s head long before they’re set on paper. We build a fondness for them, and this can make it difficult to acknowledge faults. This is especially true in our heroes. Sometimes, writers aren’t even aware that their heroes have weaknesses. However, not only do flaws make realistic characters, but they also make for entertaining ones. Dan Watanabe, Entertainment Expert and Media Arts Instructor, explains how strong character flaws can create relatable characters. In developing a story, you can create characters that are interesting by identifying each individual’s biggest flaw. This, says Watanabe, is what will make him or her memorable. Surprisingly, it’s also what will make your character lovable. Embedded in every flaw is a strength that can endear a reader to your character. Listen to the clip below as Watanabe explains how character flaws are great character development tools!
