He says many writers lose sight of this. It is not enough to have an interesting story idea. Viewers and readers have to be invested in a character and connect with him or her in some way; otherwise, they won&rsquo;t want to stick around to see what happens. In order to develop relatable characters, Miller says you have to keep your target audience in mind. An audience of children, for example, won&rsquo;t relate to a character who is upset about getting fired.
