Author and technical writer Neil V. Young believes that characterization, at its core, is not based solely on whatever genre the author is writing in. When writing about humans, there are certain factors that all people share, which can be used to push the narrative forward. While the means may be different, and characters will (and should) act in unique ways from one another, the end result will be the same. Readers want to see characters who learn a lesson or develop personally; that never changes, says Young.
