Hard-boiled fiction, also known as noir fiction, includes gritty, graphic crime writing with deeply conflicted characters. Often times the main character is an anti-hero, lacking conventional hero attributes. Author and professional book editor Elaine Ash is a big fan of this subgenre and has won many awards for her series of work under the pen name "Anonymous-9." Well-known hard-boiled writers include Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, Duane Swierczynski, and Elmore Leonard. The key to success in this subgenre, Ash says, is to find writing connections online, whether that's critique partners, places to post your work, or resources. Your writing connections will eventually lead to agents and publishers, and hopefully, a publishing deal.
