While understanding a book's genre and its associated market is important for authors, it shouldn't be the driving force behind the story or writing, as Trident Media Group literary agent Mark Gottlieb explains. He does recommend that authors at least be aware of genre trends so that you know what is or isn't working well. There may be an under-served audience that you can tap into, or, you may be able to categorize and position your book to maximize exposure and readership. Gottlieb also recommends attending industry-related conferences to see what topics are being discussed at the moment. This might give you insight into the next genre or subgenre that is about to explode. It's difficult to predict what the next big category will be, he says, but if you are paying close attention, you can capitalize on what's currently popular in the market, or, what will be popular in the near future.
