Sonny Liew, a Malaysia-born comic artist and graphic novelist based in Singapore, has found great success in the comic book industry. He is best known for The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, the first graphic novel to win the Singapore Literature Prize for fiction. It was also a New York Times and Amazon bestseller, and nominated for six Eisner awards. Liew's other award-winning work includes The Shadow Hero, Doctor Fate, and Liquid City, as well as titles for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, DC Vertigo, First Second Books, Boom Studios, Disney Press and Image Comics. Liew advises aspiring comic artists and graphic novelists to put your work out there to create awareness and to receive feedback. If you work in a vacuum, he says, you will never discover if you have an audience or what appeals to readers.
