We know that people have a variety of approaches to writing a novel. Some write by "pantsing," some by outlining, and some by a combination of both methods. While each approach offers unique advantages, each also comes with a unique set of challenges. For example, what happens if you’re “pantsing” and the story goes completely lopsided? If you’re following your characters through a story, what do you do if they become hopelessly lost? L. E. Perez, author and owner of Palmas Publishing, explains her approach to writing and how she navigates some of the challenges that come with an organic approach to a novel. In the clip below, Perez talks about the way that story and theme transcend genre, and how delightful discovering your story can be. Rather than entering into a story through the lens of genre, Perez follows the stories her characters create for her. Sometimes, that takes her exactly where she was hoping to go. However, that approach can take her to surprising storylines she wasn’t expecting. This, she admits, can make it difficult to craft a marketing plan for a book. Listen to the stories of her surprises and how she course corrects when marketing and genre become obstacles.
