Author and educator José Pablo Iriarte explains the differences between long and short fiction and the advantages of each. While he writes in both formats, Iriarte has discovered that he truly enjoys the ratio of invention to work when he writes short fiction. Like long fiction, short fiction requires an author to create a world, characters, and situations. However, short fiction doesn’t require an author to weed through 60,000 words and fully develop each of these pieces. While it may not be necessary for a writer to write both short and long fiction to find success, Iriarte has found it to be helpful. According to him, writing short fiction creates wins because of the numbers game. Even if fifty percent of your stories fail, you still have more opportunities for publication with your high volume of work. Iriarte also finds short fiction helpful because the act of writing it is incredible practice. Listen to the clip below to discover what writing short fiction can teach authors about story arc and invention!
