Some authors know exactly what they want to write and who they want to write for. They have a passion for a particular subject, age group, or genre. Other authors are fascinated by so many aspects of the world that they can’t narrow down what they want to write about. Many authors can’t even decide between writing their fiction or nonfiction projects. This can present difficulties when marketing and building an author brand. Sam Staley (SR Staley), award-winning author, film critic, and educator, has written thirteen books and experiments in different formats and genres. Interestingly enough, he would not recommend this approach to new authors. Because he has written both fiction and nonfiction books that span genres, he knows the problems it creates for a writing career. It’s particularly difficult to build a platform and find an audience when an author’s interests aren’t consistent. Staley has made this method work for him in some ways, though. He’s come to reconceptualize his job from “author” to “communicator.” Listen to the clip below to learn how Staley has found success across many genres.
