Before writing, many authors, publicists, and publishers recommend that authors know their genre inside and out. It’s okay to break genre rules but before you do you need to know those rules. Doing your research on genre involves not only reading books or stories currently being published in that genre, but also knowing where genre trends began. For example, how did science fiction get its start? Howard V. Hendrix, award-winning science fiction author and English professor, explains the history of science fiction and its connection to pulp fiction. Pulp initially got a bad rap due to lurid covers, according to Hendrix. Now, though, some of the best storytelling markets are monthly pulp fiction magazines, such as Analog. Science fiction grew out of pulp fiction, per Hendrix, and some believe it got its start in the specialized science fiction magazine Amazing Stories in 1926. Others believe the genre of science fiction goes back much farther than that. Watch the clip below to learn more about the evolution of pulp science fiction.
