One of the most effective ways of knowing when to end a book is when you reach the resolution of the conflict, as publicist and author Bryan Beach explains. The resolution is the closing action where everything is tied together. When writing a series an author can add an extra twist to an ending by creating a cliffhanger or suspenseful situation. Beach advises writers to be careful and not be too drastic or dramatic with a cliffhanger, as this might actually turn off your reader from wanting more. The key is to be subtle and make them anxiously await the next book in the series. Beach also advises writers to be sure to mention in all of your marketing copy that the book is part of a series so that your audience stays engaged.
