Foreshadowing, a literary device in which a writer hints at what is to come later in a story, can be an effective way to keep readers engaged. Author and writing teacher Valerie Willis is a big fan of using foreshadowing in her own novels. She believes it can serve as a secret way to communicate with readers, enticing them to want to read her books multiple times, searching for the clues she has left along the way. Foreshadowing can take a more direct approach in order to create reader curiosity, or, it can be more subtle, aiming to stir up certain emotions. Willis advises writers to think of their book ending as the "big reveal", like in a magic show. She also encourages writers to use beta readers to make sure there is a balance between revealing too much and too little throughout the story.
