When you write, are you a plotter or a pantser? Plotters plan out the logistics of a story before writing it. Pantsers let the story unfold as they write it, surprising themselves along with the readers. Tony N. Todaro, author, Executive Director of WC2 (West Coast Writers Conferences), and President of GLAWS (Greater Los Angeles Writers Society), is a true plotter. He explains the benefits of planning stories and worlds before writing about them. “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’re going to end up somewhere else,” says Todaro. (moved) Before writing the first draft of book one in his Lightriders series, he wrote a thirty-page synopsis. While a little long-winded for his agent (he would prefer about six pages), this initial planning document was helpful for Todaro. He appreciates the concept of discovering characters and plots as you go, but he prefers to discover these within the confines of a cohesive story arc. While Todaro doesn’t have definitive storylines mapped out for every book, he does know how certain settings and backstories play into the “universe” of his series. Listen to the clip below to learn more about the benefits of story mapping and planning long-form stories before writing them!
