Author AE Wasserman on Plotting Her Historical Mystery Series

In general, authors refer to themselves as either plotters or pantsers – they plan their entire book before writing or they simply write by the seat of their pants. Author AE Wasserman doesn’t believe she fits either of these descriptions. She’ll have an idea of where a book starts and ends, and what her theme is, but the writing process is nebulous. She never knows what the characters are going to do and where they are going to take the story. For historical mystery novels specifically, Wasserman says there has to be some leeway. There are historical elements that she may discover while writing that she realizes she has to include, which can suddenly change the direction of her plot and characters.
