The writing process can evolve over time as a writer gets more experienced, and this is the case for award-winning author, screenwriter, and editor Mike Robinson. Early on in his writing career, Robinson was a "pantser", meaning he did little to no outlining before jumping into a story. Being a pantser can be advantageous if you are good at "riding the wave and getting to shore". But, if you find yourself wiping out instead, a little outlining can go a long way. Robinson now does a little plotting or outlining up front to get him started, but then goes through a discovery process as he writes, and may do a little more plotting as he progresses. Robinson cautions writers to avoid detailed outling upfront, as this can lead to feeling restricted. You need to allow for some flexibility and see where your story and characters take you.
