When author Jeanne Lyet Gassman started conceptualizing the storyline for her book Blood of a Stone, she knew she wanted to tell the story of Jesus' ministry and life from an outsider's point of view. This approach gave her a little more freedom with the storyline. By not telling the story from a historical figure's perspective, characters can come and go as needed and aren't dictated by the story. Her main character is an everyman and any judgments he passes are based purely on his own experiences. The story succeeds in keeping Jesus a bit of a mystery and focuses more on the main character's road to discovering Jesus. She advises writers to remember that historical fiction adheres to basic facts, not exact facts, so take some risks.
