Editor Helga Schier explains how authors can use multiple perspectives to tell a story. She says that multi-perspective novels are becoming more popular amongst today’s readers. In fact, this technique creates her favorite type of novel. It lends a novel a versatility it didn’t have before, meaning it can accomplish a variety of purposes within the same story. Using multiple perspectives is particularly common for theme-driven novels. If an author is exploring a certain theme, it can be helpful to examine that theme from a variety of character perspectives. This way, the story’s conclusions aren’t made by a single character. Instead, many people within the novel are given a fair shot at their argument within the theme. In approaching a story this way, the reader has the privilege of piecing a story together instead of relying on the protagonist to do it, creating more reader engagement. However, this technique is difficult and should only be done with great care. It’s vital that the writing style stays consistent. For example, if one perspective is in the third-person point of view, all the others ought to stay in the third person. The same is true if a perspective is written in the first person. Listen to Schier in the clip below to learn more about shifting perspectives from one character to another.
