Darlyn Finch Kuhn's award-winning novel Sewing Holes started out as a memoir, inspired by her childhood experiences including her father's death and family dynamics. As she was writing she encountered a common roadblock that many memoirists face - she worried about her family's feelings and reactions to her story. Encouraged by well-known author Connie May Fowler, Kuhn decided to turn her story into a fiction novel. By mixing fact and fiction, Kuhn was able to combine characters, make up situations, and control outcomes, which she found to be incredibly freeing. Sewing Holes is set in the 1970's during the Vietnam War, so Kuhn researched carefully to make sure any historical facts that she did include were as accurate as possible.
