For award-winning author Susan Carol McCarthy, history has always been a passion. She grew up watching television shows that taught history in a way that would bring the viewer into the moment, and that has always been her goal with her historical fiction novels. McCarthy wants her readers to feel like they are living in the time period she is writing about, experiencing the conflicts that her characters are experiencing. For new writers that are considering the historical fiction genre, McCarthy advises that you make sure you are a good candidate. If you love history and like to read and learn about history, you might be a good fit for the genre. But, if you dislike research or are anxious to get your book done quickly, the historical fiction genre may not be for you. Good historical fiction takes time and research, she says. While McCarthy's books may not be popular bestsellers, they are award-winning, critically acclaimed pieces that she believes will stand the test of time.
