Every scene should be thought of as a small movie with a beginning, middle and end, and there should always be a mission or goal associated with each scene. Screenwriter, playwright, and author Art Holcomb provides the four elements that are necessary in order to accomplish that mission or goal: 1) Expand character understanding, 2) Move the plot forward, 3) Add humor or pathos, and 4) Explore the theme. If one or more of these elements is not present, he recommends rewriting the scene or removing it entirely.
