To get the creative juices flowing, fantasy author Matthew Ballard recommends that writers start by brainstorming and then evaluating their various world building ideas to ensure consistency with the overall theme that has been determined. He then recommends outlining the essential plot lines and scenes to look for holes or inconsistencies. One of the key world building elements that must be planned carefully in fantasy novels is magic. Magic, he says, is a very powerful element that must be applied consistently and coherently throughout the entire book. While this planning and structure is important to the story, Ballard advises that there is some flexibility with the setting in fantasy novels as the story progresses. It can be easily manipulated to work with the overarching theme, so don't feel like your are completely tied to your original ideas or plan. Give yourself some room to let the setting evolve as needed.
