&lt;p&gt;World building is an essential element for any good story and involves creating the setting for your story line and characters. World building is especially important for genres such as sci-fi and fantasy, as it serves as the foundation that ties everything together in these imaginary or alternative places. Sci-fi and fantasy author Maurice Broaddus likes to think of his readers as tourists. When integrating his fictitious worlds and settings into his stories he carefully and slowly unveils the various elements - like a guided tour. He cautions new writers not to dump all of the world elements on the reader at the beginning of the story, as this will overwhelm them. Sci-fi and fantasy writers should aim to out-imagine and surprise the reader as the story unfolds. Broaddus also recommends that new writers start with the big picture of their world and than work in sizable chunks, but only build what is necessary. And finally, be sure there is a purpose and rich history for what you are building.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
