Building an imaginary world for your sci-fi or fantasy novel requires a lot of brainstorming and effort. In order to track all of the various elements you develop, fantasy author and writing teacher Valerie Willis recommends maintaining a world building bible. Essentially, a notebook, binder, or file folder where you can compile and safely store all of the ideas and information you collect in the process. The first critical element you will need to consider for your new world is time period, followed by setting and geography, she says. These elements will drive much of your story, including culture, history, and characters. You must also determine your world mechanics or rules, such as magic in a fantasy novel. Willis advises writers to keep track of these details and maintain consistency throughout your entire book, as readers will notice inconsistencies and may even stop reading.
