World building can be a powerful tool for science fiction and fantasy writers, but if approached incorrectly, world building can lead to story-telling challenges. Neil V. Young, author and technical writer, offers advice on how to best tell a story that takes place in a newly-built world. “It’s very easy to miss things when you’re doing the world building, especially from scratch,” says Young. A common mistake that he sees many new writers make is ignoring the relationship between the protagonist and the world that is created. These writers get so excited to bring the reader into this new world that they forget to tell the story from the protagonist's perspective. The main character typically only knows a fraction of what the writer knows about the world. The reader is often left feeling like they are just wandering around in it without a purpose or focus. Young’s advice is to build the world first, then put the protagonist and his or her story into the world. Watch the clip below to learn more about world building dos and don'ts!

A common mistake that many writers make is to create a beautiful world but don’t know how to place a protagonist in that world. Writers get so excited to bring the reader into their world that they forget their protagonist only knows a fraction of what you do about the world. For example, they probably won’t know how or why a cathedral was built in the next town over, even if you do. It’s a beginner’s mistake to build a perfect world and then just wander around in it. Young’s advice is to divide the two processes. Build the world first, then put the protagonist and his or her story into the world. Watch the clip below to learn more about world building!
