It's never easy to hear negative feedback or criticism about your work, but it's critical that all writers get honest feedback about their writing style and their story. As screenwriter and playwright Art Holcomb advises, writers need to hear not only what is working from their first readers, but more importantly, what ISN'T working. This may include things such as where the story lags, when the reader loses interest, and what parts aren't believable. Like a roller coaster engineer, the writer controls the dips and curves and turns that take the readers on a journey. Honest feedback will pave the path for that journey to be as authentic and as powerful as possible.
