Whether it's the first time or the fiftieth, for a beginner or a New York Times bestseller, rejection is part of every author's life.

This workshop with award-winning author Laurie Schnebly Campbell offers both practical and psychological techniques for dealing with the "No, Nope and No Way" messages that writers face all too often. Discover what works for you -- and how planning your response to ANY prospective or actual setback leaves you more in control of not only your writing life, but also your personal life.

About the Presenter:
After winning Romantic Times’ “Best Special Edition of the Year” over Nora Roberts, Laurie Schnebly Campbell discovered she loved teaching every bit as much as writing...if not more. Since then she’s taught in-person and online workshops for writers from six continents (still waiting for Antarctica!) and keeps a special section of her bookshelves for novels developed in her classes. With 50+ titles there so far, she’s always hoping for more.

It's common for all types of writers to hear "No" many times throughout their career, whether it's from agents, publishers, or Hollywood executives. Because the reasons for these "Nos" are often out of your control, don't try to control it. Per former Hollywood Development Executive Dan Watanabe, there is a fear of failure amongst these decision-makers so they don't want to say "yes" to something they aren't 100% sure will be a hit. You can't take it personally, he says. The "No" likely has nothing to do with you; your project just didn't check all of the boxes of what that person was looking for.

What you can do, he says, is to persevere and keep writing. Be prepared If they ask, "What else have you got", because that's your foot in the door.

Bestselling author, TEDx Speaker, and special advisor Dr. Mark Goulston says it’s common to have an inner critic and sometimes put yourself down. To combat his own feelings of self-doubt, Dr. Goulston turns to his “Dead Mentors Society,” a group of seven mentors he has had in his life who have all passed away. The “conversations” he has with these mentors help bolster Dr. Goulston’s confidence as he recalls the kind, loving relationships he had with them. These conversations can also show him how to reframe rejections. When facing a professional rejection or setback, Dr. Goulston prefers to use the experience as an opportunity to build inner strength and learn, instead of beating himself up about it.

Oftentimes, rejection is not personal, says Carl Prude Jr., an author, speaker, and president of The Work Life Company. If you have been rejected by an agent or publisher, it’s not necessarily because they don’t like your book – the book just may not fit what they are looking for at the moment. But Prude reminds writers that with so many people in the world, there is someone out there who is looking for what you have created. To find that someone, you will need to face rejection in the process. Avoid putting pressure on yourself, and think of the rejections as part of your growth, so you’re not bombarded with negative energy.

Rejection is a necessary part of the publishing process. Learning to cope with it is a part of publishing a book. But, what if instead of coping with rejection, an author learned to use rejection to propel himself or herself across the finish line? Elle E. Ire, author and educator, explains why celebrating author rejections is a vital part of the writing process. “Rejection is a part of the game. And I call it a game because I like to play,” says Ire. She encourages authors to use rejection instead of dwelling on it. It was one of her greatest regrets that she stopped trying to publish her first book because of rejection. It’s important for authors to wear their rejections proudly because a rejection is a sign of bravery. She and her husband host rejection parties that are a celebration of the hard work that it takes to put yourself out there. It’s a scary thing to submit your work anywhere, but courage is a vital part of being an author. In the clip below, learn to transform rejections into signs of victory.

It took Gwendolyn Rogers two and half years to reach her dream of owning her own storybook restaurant and bakery. During this time, she was told "no" by many people, with many others questioning her vision. Now a destination for celebrations and special occasions, The Cake Bake Shop is an award-winning, globally recognized establishment. Capitalizing on this success, Rogers is in the process of publishing a cookbook and opening a second location. She attributes much of her success to her relentless determination and desire to share her passion for cooking and baking with others. For Rogers, if you have a dream or passion, it's not worth pursuing unless you are willing to pour your entire soul into making it happen. Had she listened to any of the negativity, she wouldn't be where she is today. Rogers advises others to stay focused, be persistent, and if it's meant to be, it will all work out. Most importantly, she says, is to enjoy the journey.

For the past five years, Apprentice University has sought to provide students throughout Indiana and beyond with access to education unrestricted. Author of You're Always Being Interviewed and founder Ron Brumbarger originally created the university to alleviate a talent shortage in the technology industry, but has since expanded its focus to include a diverse community of professionals and students. For more in-depth study and engagement, Brumbarger created two institutes within the university, one of which is the Failure Institute. Why focus on failure? Because where would we be if we weren't constantly learning from our failures, he says. As a self-published author, Brumbarger understands how self-doubt and thoughts of failure can consume writers. He encourages fellow authors to embrace failures and setbacks and learn from them, because doing so will only lead to growth.
