Attending writing conferences can be a great way for writers and authors to network, learn, and improve their craft. To get even more out of these types of events, media arts instructor Dan Watanabe recommends that attendees challenge themselves and sign up for the workshops that are outside of their wheelhouse or area of interest. For example, if you write science fiction, sit in on a workshop about memoir. Watanabe says it's amazing what you can learn about story structure, writing techniques, story ideas, and more. You'll also be surprised by the similarities in genres that you thought were vastly different from one another. By opening your mind to new things, you might also expand your creativity, voice, and craft.
www.authorlearningcenter.com/.../TheBenefitofAttendingWritingWorkshopsOutsideYourComfortZone.mp4

Writing workshops can be an invaluable tool to all writers, new or published. Classes and workshops can build confidence, combat writer's block, or serve as a means of interacting with other writers. Author Beth Hermes, teacher of a “Creative Writing Boot Camp” at FoxTale Book Shoppe in Woodstock, Georgia, designed her program to force writers to get out of their own way. She finds that many writers tend to over think their writing. Her three-hour course includes numerous writing prompts and she is always impressed with the quality of the writing that comes out of these exercises. Meant to spawn ideas and inspire, these prompts often surprise the writers themselves, rejuvenating their love for writing and motivating them to keep going.

When Julia Whitehead first founded the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library she imagined a place where people could learn about Vonnegut's life story and how it influenced and inspired his writing career. What started as an opportunity to honor Kurt Vonnegut and his legacy, turned into a significant resource for the writing community in Indianapolis, Indiana. Within two years of opening, the museum expanded its programs to include writing workshops and contests, with a special focus on supporting veterans. Vonnegut spoke often about the importance of creation and Whitehead hopes that visitors and fans leave the museum feeling inspired to create.

As a writing workshop participant and teacher, author Jeanne Lyet-Gassman recommends face-to-face or in person workshops versus online. If online is all that is available to you, she suggests searching community colleges and even social media for online courses and discussion or critique groups. For in person events, Lyet-Gassman recommends attending writers conferences if it works within your budget, or searching websites such as Meetup.com to find local writing groups. And don't forget to check with your local library. All of these options are a valuable way to help others improve their writing while discovering areas of improvement in your own writing.

Online writing workshops are a great online resource for authors to improve their writing skills. For authors who can't attend an in-person writing class, because of distance or scheduling issues, online writing classes help authors improve their writing from anywhere. Online classes also allow authors to take specific niche classes, like travel writing, that they might not be able to find elsewhere.
