By joining a writer’s group and engaging with other writers, you expose yourself to a wealth of learning opportunities, explains author, editor, and ghostwriter Kathi Macias. She is a member of two professional groups for more experienced authors and speakers, but encourages newer writers to check out The Writer’s View, a group for professional and aspiring writers in the Christian market. This online group hosts discussions about popular writing, marketing, and publishing topics, and gives less experienced members the chance to seek guidance from authors who have gone through the book writing and publishing process. Macias reminds writers that it’s okay to admit you need help or desire guidance – it’s a great way to learn and grow.

As social creatures, humans need people they can create with and grow with, and this extends to authors in the writing process, says literary agent Steve Hutson. A critique group is an author’s tribe, made up of writers with a similar mission who all want to help each other. The group can help you get your book manuscript in its best shape; however, a professional editor is still needed before publication. Your critique group may be filled with sharp, passionate writers, but an experienced editor will better know what is needed to take your book to the next level and ensure it is marketable.

It’s a cliché that a writer’s life is solitary because so much of the writing process is done in private. However, writers don’t need to be lonely. The writing community is large and diverse—there are so many different types of writers. Because many writers want to connect with one another, networking within writers circles is possible and quite a bit of fun. Authors can meet one another online, but they can also meet each other at conferences, workshops, and other events. While networking, some writers create formal groups as support systems in today’s complex publishing world. For example, YA Chicks is a group of young adult authors that work together to achieve goals and do events. Racquel Henry, writer and editor, is a member of the group and loves the support system that YA Chicks provides. In this clip, she describes how she met the other writers and what they do to encourage one another. Learn how a writer’s group can help you in your publishing journey, from drafting to editing to marketing.

Writing is typically done in solitary spaces, but it doesn’t have to be a lonely process. Inviting other people into your work can spark creativity, prompt motivation, and create comradery. The internet is, of course, a fantastic way to connect with other authors. However, interacting face-to-face with local writers has the benefit of accountability through personal relationships and shared experiences. Local writing communities are almost everywhere. Some people, though, can’t find what they’re looking for in their cities or towns and instead create their own writers’ networks. One such person is Racquel Henry. Henry is a writer, editor, and founder of the Writer’s Atelier. In the clip below, Henry tells the story of how she created her writing group. She hoped to create a community that would connect writers to one another, without much cost to the writers themselves. This group has grown over the years to include editing, writer’s workshops, and other resources. Learn more about her story here!

Writing is a famously solitary process, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a lonely one. Especially as authors start to market, it can be helpful to have a built-in network of people who are available for brainstorming and feedback. Author P.J. Hoover is part of an author's collective that helps each member in surprising ways. Hoover describes how the group got started and the unexpected benefits each author found in the group. The goal of her group was originally to be a marketing group, but as time went on, they discovered a much deeper purpose to their group. Listen to the clip below to hear more about her experience with marketing groups!

Author Joan Gelfand discusses resources for writers and poets, both local and around the world. Writing is a solitary process, but it doesn’t have to be lonely. In fact, if you take a moment to start researching your options, you’ll find a barrage of writing groups as writers try to get feedback and find support with one another. Gelfand has very specific recommendations, though, of people who are supporting one another well. Of course, as former president, she recommends the Women’s National Book Association. It’s a networking and resourcing organization. Listen to the clip below to discover more!
