<div class="asl-wikipage-summary">Some stories need to be written. But at what cost? Ann Pearlman, author of &quot;Inside the Crips,&quot; discusses how she co-wrote a gang memoir with Colton Simpson and how she was later subpoenaed to discuss the details of 25-year-old crimes. She fought hard to avoid testifying. Not only did she want to avoid hurting her co-author, but if she was punished based on the details revealed in the book it could make publishers, sources, and writers reluctant to take on controversial projects. She feels that it would be a great loss to humanity if books like this one&mdash;which highlights recovery, overcoming adversity, and making changes&mdash;where no longer told.</div>
