Singer-songwriter Richard Marx has sold more than 30 million albums, scored 14 chart-topping singles, and has earned a Grammy for Song of the Year. What's his secret for writing songs that are adored by so many and that stand the test of time? Marx learned early on in his career that the more personal and emotional he gets with his songs, the more universal they are, and the more listeners can relate, worldwide. When touring and interacting with his fans he can see them reacting to his songs and feeling what he was feeling when writing them. Marx's song lyrics are so personal that when he wrote "Right Here Waiting" and offered it to Barbra Streisand, she told him she loved the music but he would have to rewrite the lyrics because "I'm not going to be right here waiting for anybody!" Marx released the song even though it didn't fit the rock album that he was working on at the time, and it became one of his best known songs.
