In the last few decades, horror has left the realm of the low-budget “B-Movie” and entered into mainstream media. With blockbuster hits and Oscar-nominated stories like Get Out and A Quiet Place, more and more people are seeking stories that will thrill and scare them. Neil V. Young, author and technical writer, explains the elements necessary to create a terrifying story. Per Young, two key elements that need to exist alongside each other are suspense and the fear of the unknown. He explains that the reader needs to get the feeling that something is out there, but they don’t know what it is. Young sees too many horror writers try to rely heavily on visuals, which he believes is a mistake. In his horror stories, Young takes into account every sense - sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. This approach heightens the reader experience in a way that visuals, on their own, cannot. Watch the clip below to learn more about crafting a truly horrifying story.
