As a former journalist and now fiction author, Christina Hoag can clearly see how writing a novel differs from writing something like a self-help or business book. In fiction, a writer must bring a unique voice to the story. This voice becomes the narrator. A fiction writer must also use their imagination to create characters, a setting, and a story line or plot. In nonfiction, the voice is more neutral, unless you are writing a memoir.
