As a 35-year-old bouncer in Vancouver, he realized there were many fun stories to be used as inspiration for a fictional character and story. By 2018, Brown was waiting on publishing deals for some of his other books, so in the meantime, his editor suggested he turn his short stories about Moose into a novella. Brown figured writing a novella would be an easier process than writing a longer book, but he found that it took him eight to nine months to complete the 30,000-word story.
