Morgan James Publishing works with a variety of author clients and genres including nonfiction, fiction, and faith. Founder and bestselling author David Hancock has seen some recent trends in the faith category of writing. In faith-based fiction, readers are looking for clean, family-friendly content that is not overtly faith-based. There is a struggle in the entertainment industry with TV, movies, and books to fill this need.

In nonfiction, Hancock sees a trend of giving readers the tools they need to be successful, and tying the content back to scripture or the message. This makes readers feel safer in their decision-making, based on their own statement of faith.

If you plan to take on the task of maintaining a writing blog, it's important to have a clear vision of what you want to write about. Per fantasy author and book coach C.R. Rowenson, you can write about virtually anything including the writing journey itself. You can also dig into specifics around your genre, interests, or area of expertise. It's equally important to understand what you hope readers get out of your blog. He recommends checking out ProBlogger.com if you're just getting started.

Science fiction and fantasy author William F. Wu’s most recent book is a composite novel made of ten adventures that were originally published separately as short stories. A Temple of Forgotten Spirits follows Jack Hong, who is following a mystical unicorn out of Chinese mythology. Along the way, Jack learns about Chinese-American history and his own identity. Wu says Jack is one his readers’ favorite characters. He’s sarcastic, outspoken, and gets into trouble. Wu is deliberate about how Jack gets into trouble, however. Jack is never able to solve a problem with violence – any time he’s in a violent altercation, he loses. Wu wants his readers to see Jack instead succeed through courage and persistence, not physical violence.

Moose’s Law was inspired by author Jonathan Brown’s real-life experience as a bouncer. As a 35-year-old bouncer in Vancouver, he realized there were many fun stories to be used as inspiration for a fictional character and story. By 2018, Brown was waiting on publishing deals for some of his other books, so in the meantime, his editor suggested he turn his short stories about Moose into a novella. Brown figured writing a novella would be an easier process than writing a longer book, but he found that it took him eight to nine months to complete the 30,000-word story. However, he says it was worth the struggle – fans are asking for a series, and the novella has also been recorded into an audiobook by Brown.

Author, editor, and speaker Sharon Norris Elliott’s devotional, 366 Glimpses Of God: Getting To Know The God Who Knows You, consists of what were originally blog posts. Norris Elliott wrote a daily blog for six or seven years, where she would comment on the Bible reading she had completed each morning. The blog was fairly new when Norris Elliott realized the impact it was having on her audience. After two or three months, she skipped a day, and received many comments from readers wondering where that day’s post was. Her devotional includes 366 of her blog entries and was published through the Holy Spirit Broadcasting Network, where Norris Elliott is a panelist and talk show host.

Over the years, author, editor, and ghostwriter Kathi Macias has learned that the rules of writing, marketing, and releasing a book series successfully are always changing. But she has found some methods that have worked for her. When picking a subject matter, writing about current topics seems to attract a lot of attention. Even when writing historical novels, like Macias, you can still deal with a timely issue. Macias wrote a series on human trafficking, a timely topic that brought in many readers. You also have to carefully consider the release schedule. Macias says that leaving 6-9 months between book releases works best. If you release the books too quickly after one another, people won’t be as anxious and eager to read the next one – plus, you need time to market the book. If you wait too long, readers will lose interest and forget the story.
