As a teacher of speculative fiction, author Maurice Broaddus understands how confusing all of the different genres and sub-genres can be, especially when speaking sci-fi and fantasy. It can be daunting to try and determine the specific sub-genre into which your book might fit. Don't put too much focus on this, Broaddus says. First, write for yourself and get down the stories you want to tell. You do need to read widely and understand the market for your type of story, but keep in mind that some genre and sub-genre labels are more about marketing. For example, with his trilogy The Knights of Brenton Court, Broaddus wrote the first book in the series thinking it was a young adult crime/horror novel, but the publisher labeled it as an adult urban fantasy novel. This didn't change the story or his approach, it just determined the primary audience that the publisher was pursuing.
