The phrase "writing to market" means following the latest book sale trends and writing content that is popular and known to sell. Before eBooks and self-publishing, the act of writing to market was frowned upon because the publishing process took much longer, making it difficult to react quickly to trends. It often resulted in wasted time, money, and effort. The outcome can be quite different today, says author, freelancer, and marketing expert Jason Schmetzer. Writers can now use online self-publishing platforms such as Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) to release their books to the market with just a few keystrokes. This cuts down the publishing timeline significantly, allowing writers to catch the waves of popularity (if they can create the content fast enough). There is still some negativity surrounding the practice as many in the industry feel this approach leads to low-quality content. Instead of writing to their own strengths, writers are focused on copying genre trends when writing to market. Per Schmetzer, if you are going to attempt this approach you must do your research and be careful not to pollute the brand you've already established. Releasing a poorly written book in an alternative genre could alienate your primary readers. The best way to approach writing to market, he says, is watching for trends in the things you already know.
