Over the years, author, editor, and speaker Sharon Norris Elliott has come to discover that when writing for a younger audience, most readers will want to read up a level. For example, Norris Elliott wrote What? Teenagers in the Bible? with a high-school audience in mind. She teaches at a Christian high school, and wanted her students to read relatable stories from the Bible. After publishing the book, however, Norris Elliott found that the book was read mostly by middle schoolers. With that in mind, she recommends that authors writing for children or young adults take note of that adjustment, and remember that whatever audience you originally had in mind may not be the audience most fitting to your book.
