For some writers, not knowing where a story is going can be exciting and can lead to cool, unexpected discoveries. Other writers, such a screenwriter, author, and MFA educator Michael Tabb, carefully plan their stories. Per Tabb, building a solid foundation up front will save time and effort down the road when it comes to editing and rewriting. Tabb believes that great writing is by intelligent design. In his book, Prewriting Your Screenplay, Tabb takes writers from idea generation to building the foundation that is required for an impactful, cohesive story. Writers have an important message that they are trying to communicate. Tabb encourages writers to plan thoroughly in order to deliver that message in the way intended.
