When former English teacher and middle-grade author Laura Martin started writing her story about dinosaurs, she didn't want to get sidetracked by research. She knew there was a vast amount of information available on the topic that could easily distract her from completing the story. Martin grabbed the first educational dinosaur book she found and used it to add placeholder dinosaurs in her manuscript. Once the book deal for her critically acclaimed series Edge of Extinction was solidified with her publisher, Harper Collins, Martin revisited her manuscript and did a deep dive into research to enhance the dinosaurs in her story and to ensure accuracy. Further revisions followed when her editor requested that Martin add feathers to her dinosaurs, honoring the latest research findings. One of the challenges of writing about dinosaurs, Martin says, is that research findings will likely continue to evolve and change.
