Arthur Doweyko, award-winning author and scientist, explains the varying degrees of scientific accuracy displayed in sci-fi novels and movies. He has different standards for critiquing scientific accuracy, depending on the type of science fiction it is. Science fiction that is close kin to fantasy doesn’t necessarily need to be scientifically accurate, because it’s developing its own world with its own rules. Movies, though, are different. For example, the cinematic rules of a movie are diametrically opposed to the rules of space. This creates for visual elements that aren’t accurate in any version of our world. Because of budget limits and production values, producers ask viewers to suspend reality in ways that an author doesn’t need to request of a reader. To learn more about the complexities of creating a scientifically accurate science fiction world, listen to Doweyko in the clip below.
