Characters are important to a story, but the world they live in is just as important. A writer needs to create a world that a reader wants to spend a lot of time in. Howard V. Hendrix, author and professor, explains how he approaches world building in science fiction. He researches before he begins world building. He has an important approach to research that allows him to be efficient. “I don’t want to go down a rabbit hole with the research,” he says. “But I need enough of it to get my readers to suspend disbelief.” He has two rules about world building. The first is that the world needs to be a plausible place. The second rule is that the world needs to be its own character. Learn what he means by that and get ideas for your own world building process in the clip below!
