Research is the boon and bane of all historical authors, says historical fiction author AE Wasserman. When working on a book, about 50% of her time is spent on research. It can take a huge amount of effort, but it pays off to have an accurate novel that transports readers back in time. Wasserman uses maps, archives, old newspapers, and a collection of experts to conduct research for her novels. This can help add small details that enrich the story, but Wasserman warns historical fiction authors to not fill their books with “information dumps.” This slows down the story, and readers want a fast pace. Wasserman ends up with a huge amount of information that readers never see, but that’s because her books are historical fiction, not historical lessons.
