When author, editor, and ghostwriter Kathi Macias first started writing in the ‘80s, she would spend days at the library doing research. Now, she is able to conduct all of her initial research on the internet. She’ll gather as much basic information as she can on the history, setting, and other details, and then turns to human sources. This may include subject experts or, if she’s writing about another country, someone who has lived in that area. For example, Macias’s book No Greater Love begins in South Africa, January 1989. She sent her writing to a pastor who lived in the country, who said she had to mention the sounds of a certain beetle, which begin singing every January 1st in South Africa. Integrating that element helped make Macias’s story more authentic.
