If your book takes place in the past, science fiction and fantasy author William F. Wu warns that your story shouldn’t turn into a historical lecture. You should be able to move the story forward while incorporating factual details as you go. For example, Wu explains, if you have a character riding in a carriage in Europe during pre-modern times, what would he or she see during that carriage ride? By focusing on the character’s journey and viewing the world through his or her viewpoint, the historical details become more interesting and integrated with the rest of the story.
