Perez, author and owner of Palmas Publishing, spent 15 years in law enforcement within victim services. She explains how she integrates the stories, the emotions, and the encounters she had with victims of domestic violence and their families into her writing. In addition, she shares her own experience as a survivor. Doing research on domestic violence is vital before creating a character who encounters domestic violence. &ldquo;If you&rsquo;re writing about a domestic violence survivor and you&rsquo;ve never been one, you need to talk to one. You need to find out exactly how it was that they felt,&rdquo; says Perez.&nbsp; In the clip below, Perez explains why this is crucial and ways that authors can research the interior lives of survivors. Because the subject is so sensitive and trauma processes are so unique, interviews are necessary to create believable, compelling characters. However, it can be difficult to tactfully secure and conduct interviews with survivors.
